Black dragons make up 52% of all dragon on dragon related homicides with over 91% of black on black crime being committed by a black dragon. Let's be real here, they're hardly even sentient. They're also promiscuous and have no sense of traditional values or morals. 0.08% of all Black dragons have sewer plague, and secretly worship Zuggtmoy.

Depends on the lore. In some campaign settings like D&D, fuck yes they are. They are arguably the most evil due to their tendencies for torture among other things. Generally most nerds are gonna use it as a basis because it's the most popular table top setting around.

But then you have movies like Dragon Heart where one of the main protagonists is a Red Dragon, and doesn't act like one from D&D at all. In fact, I'd argue that dragon was chaotic neutral, or even some semblance of good. And that dragon was extremely powerful. He didn't have the outright raw magical ability of some of the dragons of other settings, but he was able to take out near entire armies by his lonesome from the get go. The only reason if I remember correctly that he was taken out is because he was flying around a castle that was prepared for him and the humans had figured out they could shoot his wings.

I also kind of suspect that he wanted to die. He was literally the last of his kind and would mention that it was quite lonely.

Black dragons are not only known for their sadistic cruelty, but they are know to be the most cautious, even cowardly of the Chromatics.
Actually. if you look at the way a Black Dragon attacks, it reflects pretty much everything you need to know about them. They are intelligent ambush predators; amphibious, and prefer to strike weaker targets from a hidden position. (Eg: lurching from the water to drown a target, or spray them in the face with flesh melting acid.)
Don't get me wrong; fire is extremely sadistic and brutal. (Like with red dragons) But there's something about acid spraying someone and melting them into a liquid puddle that screams they are the extra 'mean' of the chromatic dragons. They enjoy pain the most.

I said that some would turn to worship of Ole Zuggtmoy as a joke, but in all seriousness, out of any of the dragons a black dragon would probably be the most likely to ever give her tribute. She's the goddess of fungus, decay, and some slimes; which is exactly the kind of things black dragons like to live and surround themselves in.

They do admittedly have a reputation of being a tad cruel. But, they tend to live in regions even rarer than most, if not by what's around them so much as accessibility, not to mention how rare it is for a noble heroic knight to deign to venture into a swampy hellscape full of bugs and bogs that'll dull their silvery plate.
Consequently, I'm inclined to call them vindictive, more than outright cruel, as they don't follow the usual fare and try to impose themselves on those around their territories nearly so much. Much more inclined to stay in a quiet, comfortable, isolated lair, away from the usual hustle and bustle of dragonkind.

Those guys are pretty cool. Nightwings are based off of them, actually. Though it's with the old model where it was assumed mouth rot was responsible for their venom, not actual venom.

My fellow King, allow me to explain. Had the dragon community simply been allowed to flourish and prosper, they would have elevated not only their own but the welfare and overall quality of life among all other species. Tell me this, while humans were off living in caves and dancing around fires, who do you think was planting the seeds of education, culture, and the beginnings of civilization as we know it? It was the Black Dragons that built the pyramids, original dungeons, and came up with the first concepts for a castle that human's culturally appropriated. Gargauth was a dragon, Gond was a dragon; Zarus was a undeniably a dragon! Humans have long since been not only destroying dragonkind, but taking credit and appropriating their achievements and culture as there own. There's nothing more scummy than a human wizard who uses an orb of acid in the presence of a black dragon.
