The problem is HOAs as a concept vs HOAs in practice. Which is basically the problem every system has. Looks good on paper, ends up being shit irl.

A good HOA is all those things, it is a benefit to the people involved. A bad HOA is everything people hate about HOAs and are simply an avenue for shitty people to have power over other people for a power trip.

The problem is that there is no governing body for HOAs so there's no way to enforce the rules of an ideal HOA and no way to protect against shitty people going on a power trip.

Even the best HOAs can still cause problems for its residents and the concept of HOAs contributes to the uniformity of suburbia that causes a bunch of other issues in the long run.

Also this image is a really bad argument for HOAs, only the second point actually tries to disprove the points the "myth" it's addressing.

The first and last one don't disprove the myth, they actually affirm that the myth is correct, the "Fact" just looks at it from a different perspective.

The HOA does indeed only exist to enforce strict rules, the thing is those rules have a purpose and are supposedly good for the overall health of the neighborhood.

The HOA does indeed limit personal freedom, but just like the first point, it does so because it's attempting to create an environment that benefits everyone.

So those aren't really "Myths" by any means, but rather just disagreements. People who don't think the rules are necessary or that the lack of personal freedom is a downside and not worth the desired end result, will not like an HOA no matter how well the HOA is ran.

The only one that really is a "Myth" by any means of the word is the second one. The HOA fees are supposedly necessary. They are there in theory to pay for things to make the neighborhood better or cleaner. In practice that's not always the case.

For every one person you see talking about how great their HOA is, you see a dozen people talking about how the HOA doesn't live up to the standards of a good HOA.
